''Shooter'' was a 1988 TV pilot that NBC decided not to pick up as a series. Instead NBC aired the pilot as a TV movie of the week. The film is based on the book "Shooter" by and about Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer David Hume Kennerly. Kennerly had been a combat photo journalist during the Vietnam War. Later he was the White House photographer for president Gerald Ford. The Shooter film followed the adventures of a fictional photo journalist Matt Thompson in Vietnam played by Jeffrey Nordling, in his debut role. The TV pilot was made shortly after ''Good Morning Vietnam'' that had been a hit in theaters, and the TV film borrowed two actors from the ''Good Morning Vietnam'' cast, Noble Willingham and Cu Ba Nguyen, as well as having a free-spirited protagonist who is constantly clashing with his superiors. The pilot was filmed on location in Thailand. David Hume Kennerly served as executive producer and writer.
